Calgary vs Vancouverthe independent comparison · index 7.4 vs 8.2

Calgary is the prairie energy capital running on oil, gas, and a flat 10 percent provincial tax. Vancouver is the Pacific coastal counterweight at 1.5 times the rent line, a softer winter, and a tech labor base that closes the salary gap on equity. The decision separates by industry, weather tolerance, and whether the household will buy a single family home for under 700,000 Canadian dollars.

№ 01 , The Verdict

Which city wins.

The two cities answer different questions. The headline number resolves the index, the breakdown resolves the fit.

The Verdict

Vancouver wins on balance.

Vancouver wins on balance by 0.8 of a point, off a safety floor of 8.6, a milder climate, and the Pacific coast access. Calgary wins on cost, the energy salary stack, the lowest provincial tax in Canada, and the single family home math for the family of four.

Vancouver
on the everycity index 2026

Vancouver scored 8.2 on the everycity index in 2026, Calgary scored 7.4. The headline gap is 0.8 of a point. Vancouver wins safety by 0.8 of a point, walkability by 1.0, public transit by 1.4, and the climate axis by the milder winter. Calgary wins rent by 1,080 Canadian dollars a month on the central one bedroom, the after tax salary line for the energy professional by a structural margin, and the single family home affordability axis by an even wider one. For the long form, see the Calgary city profile and the Vancouver city profile.

The cleanest decision rule we have found: if the household works in oil, gas, mining, or the prairie energy services stack, the household will buy a single family home under 700,000 Canadian dollars, and the household tolerates a 7F January and a 32 inch annual snowfall, Calgary is the math. If the household works in tech, film, ESG finance, or the West coast venture stack, the household weights safety and walkability above the cost line, Vancouver is the math.

For the regional context, both cities anchor North America at the Western Canadian tier. For the country level read, see Canada. The tech jobs ranking places Vancouver at number 17 globally and Calgary at number 64; the safest cities ranking places Vancouver at number 12 and Calgary at number 24.
