Annual ranking 14 cities Updated 19 May 2026
№ Journal , Careers

Where the tech worker earns most in 2026.

14 cities ranked for software engineers, data scientists, and product managers in 2026, weighted on median compensation, the tax position after relocation, talent density per square kilometer, and the visa pathway for non citizens.

San Francisco at duskStill the salary capital, holding number 1

Global tech headcount reached 71 million workers at the end of 2025 per the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs 2026 report, up from 47 million in 2019. The cohort distributes unevenly. 14 cities take 64 percent of the salaried tech workforce earning above 100,000 USD a year, and the spread between the top and bottom of that list runs 3 to 1 on compensation and 6 to 1 on after tax take home once the local rate hits the cash. The right ranking for tech workers in 2026 is not the most fashionable city. It is the city where the salary number, the tax rate, the cost of housing, and the visa pathway compound into the highest after tax wealth accumulation across a five year horizon. This is the working ranking. For broader career reading see the best cities for tech jobs ranking, the best cities for startup founders 2026, and the highest paying cities ranking.

№ 01 , The shortlist

Fourteen cities, ranked by tech worker fit in 2026

The methodology weights four variables equally. Median senior software engineer total compensation in the local currency, drawn from Levels.fyi (Q1 2026 dataset, 312,000 verified offers), Glassdoor, and OECD Earnings Database. Effective tax rate at the senior compensation level, calculated against the local authority schedule with standard professional deductions applied. Talent density measured as venture funded technology employees per square kilometer of the metropolitan core. Visa pathway scored on annual application caps, processing times, and the green card or permanent residency timeline. For context against the broader career picture see the best cities for remote work ranking and our tax calculator tool, which models the after tax position across 47 jurisdictions on a real offer number.

№ 02 , San Francisco and the Bay Area

Still the salary ceiling, despite everything

San Francisco retained the global salary ceiling for senior software engineers through 2025 even as the metropolitan headcount fell 11 percent against the 2022 peak. Levels.fyi Q1 2026 data places the median Staff Software Engineer total compensation at 612,000 USD (base 240,000, equity 320,000 annualized, bonus 52,000) at the FAANG tier; Senior Software Engineer (L5 equivalent) lands at 410,000 USD. The metropolitan area hosts 22 of the 50 highest valued private companies in the world per CB Insights Q1 2026, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe, Databricks, and Anduril. The Bay Area tech workforce sits at 425,000 salaried roles per the California Employment Development Department April 2026 release.

The tax position is the painful counterweight. California top marginal hits 13.3 percent state income, federal 37.0 percent, the Mental Health Services tax of 1.0 percent on income above 1 million USD, plus the Medicare 1.45 percent and Social Security to the wage base. Combined effective at the 410,000 USD line lands at 41.8 percent before the city deductions and the qualified retirement contributions. Housing compresses what is left. The Mission, SoMa, Hayes Valley, and Noe Valley one bedroom rents run 3,400 to 4,800 USD a month in Q1 2026 per Apartments.com. The 410,000 USD median compounds to 174,000 USD a year after tax and after a central one bedroom, which is still the highest after housing tech worker number on the planet. For deeper context see our San Francisco city profile, the Austin vs San Francisco comparison, and the best banks for expats guide for the international transfer mechanics on equity vesting events. International transfers from offshore stock plan sales run cleanest through Wise, which holds rates within 0.4 percent of the mid market on the major pairs.

№ 03 , Seattle, New York, and Austin

The three US salary alternatives

Seattle sits as the strongest US alternative to the Bay Area for senior tech workers on after tax compensation. The Washington State no income tax position pushes the 345,000 USD senior median into the 232,000 USD after federal tax range, 8 percent above the equivalent in San Francisco at the same nominal level. Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Google, Apple, and Salesforce together employ 88,000 tech workers in the Puget Sound metropolitan area per the Washington Technology Industry Association January 2026 report. Median one bedroom rent in Capitol Hill, South Lake Union, and Ballard runs 2,650 to 3,100 USD a month, which keeps the after housing position 12 to 15 percent ahead of the Bay Area at the same compensation tier.

New York holds the second largest US tech labor pool at 358,000 salaried roles per the New York City Economic Development Corporation Q1 2026 report. The compensation runs 8 to 12 percent below San Francisco at the senior tier (325,000 USD median for senior software engineer total compensation per Levels.fyi) but the New York City local income tax of 3.876 percent on top of the New York State 10.9 percent top marginal pushes the combined burden to 48.6 percent at the senior line. The non tech employer diversification (the finance sector employs 470,000, healthcare 590,000, media 290,000) supports a deeper job market for non engineering roles in the household, which is the variable that pulls the dual income family question toward New York and away from the Bay. Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights, and Long Island City one bedroom rents run 3,400 to 4,800 USD a month in Q1 2026 per StreetEasy.

Austin closes the US trio. Tesla, Oracle, Dell, Apple, Indeed, and Bumble anchor the local cluster at 178,000 tech workers per the Austin Chamber of Commerce February 2026 release. Texas levies no state income tax, but property taxes run 1.7 to 2.4 percent of assessed value annually (the practical effect on a 600,000 USD home is 12,000 USD a year before the homestead exemption). At the 245,000 USD senior software engineer median, the after tax position is the strongest in the United States outside Seattle. The summer heat (110F heat dome events in 7 of the last 10 years) and the public transit gap (the Project Connect light rail does not open central lines until 2027 and 2029) are the lifestyle counterweights. For the side by side see our Austin vs San Francisco page and the highest salary cities ranking.

№ 04 , Zurich and the Swiss premium

The European salary leader

Zurich sits as the European city where the senior tech worker takes home the highest after tax salary, by a 15 to 22 percent margin against the next European entry. Median senior software engineer compensation at Google Zurich, Apple, Meta, Disney Research, and the local financial services tech cluster (UBS, Credit Suisse legacy systems, Swiss Re) runs 178,000 CHF a year base plus 28,000 to 65,000 CHF in equity and bonus. The federal Swiss income tax tops at 11.5 percent; the Zurich cantonal tax adds 13.0 percent at the relevant income tier; the city tax of 8.0 percent stacks on top. Combined effective at the 200,000 CHF gross line lands at 23 to 26 percent depending on the religious tax election (the standard secular position skips the church tax of 1 percent).

The Swiss B permit for EU and EFTA nationals takes 4 to 8 weeks to process; for non EU and EFTA nationals the canton quota system limits to 8,500 work permits a year and requires an employer sponsored application. A 1 bedroom in Wiedikon, Wipkingen, or Aussersihl runs 1,800 to 2,650 CHF a month in Q1 2026 per Homegate. Health insurance is mandatory at 320 to 480 CHF a month per adult under the LAMal scheme, which is the line item that pushes the cost of living above the headline rent suggests. The 5 year wealth accumulation math at a 178,000 CHF base in Zurich beats London, Berlin, and Stockholm by 35 to 70 percent at the senior tier. For deeper context see our Zurich city profile and the Amsterdam vs London comparison for the broader European salary picture.

№ 05 , London, Berlin, and Amsterdam

The three European mainland defaults

London hosts the largest European tech labor pool at 412,000 salaried roles per the Tech Nation 2026 People and Skills report, more than Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin combined. The senior software engineer median runs 110,000 GBP at the FAANG and finance crossover cluster (Goldman Sachs engineering, JPMorgan Chase technology division, Revolut, Wise, Monzo, Cleo, Cazoo, Octopus Energy). The UK top marginal of 45.0 percent kicks in at 125,140 GBP, plus the employee National Insurance contribution of 2.0 percent above the threshold; the effective at the 110,000 GBP median is 33.5 percent. The Skilled Worker visa pathway processes in 3 to 8 weeks with the 38,700 GBP minimum salary threshold (Q4 2025 update) and grants 5 year stay before the Indefinite Leave to Remain application. Median one bedroom rent in Shoreditch, Hackney, Clapham, and Brixton runs 1,800 to 2,650 GBP a month per Rightmove Q1 2026.

Berlin holds the largest German tech employer cluster at SAP Labs Berlin, Zalando, Delivery Hero, N26, Wayfair, Booking.com engineering, and the Mozilla MZLA Berlin office. Senior software engineer median compensation runs 95,000 EUR a year. The German top marginal of 42.0 percent applies from 66,761 EUR (2026 schedule), with the additional 5.5 percent solidarity surcharge dropped for most earners but retained at the highest tier; effective at the 95,000 EUR line lands at 37 percent. The EU Blue Card pathway for non EU nationals processes in 6 to 12 weeks with the 45,300 EUR minimum salary for IT roles (90,000 EUR for the general route in 2026), and grants permanent residency in 21 months for German speaking applicants or 33 months without. Median one bedroom rent in Kreuzberg, Neukoelln, Mitte, and Prenzlauer Berg runs 1,150 to 1,650 EUR a month per ImmoScout24.

Amsterdam hosts the global engineering for Booking.com, Adyen, Uber EMEA, Netflix EMEA, and the European arms of Tesla and Spotify. The 30 percent ruling cuts the effective tax for qualifying expat hires (defined as recruited from at least 150 kilometers outside the Netherlands) to 36.93 percent on the taxable 70 percent of gross for 5 years (reduced from 8 in the 2024 fiscal package, with a 2025 review pending). Senior software engineer median at the qualifying tier runs 92,000 EUR a year; the after tax for an arriving non Dutch hire under the 30 percent ruling lands at 64,800 EUR a year, which compares favorably against Berlin and London on a like for like senior comparison. For the side by side see Amsterdam vs Berlin and our best banks for expats guide for the SEPA banking mechanics.

№ 06 , Tel Aviv and the startup salary anomaly

The densest startup cluster, per capita

Tel Aviv hosts the highest density of venture funded technology employers per capita in the world by a measurable margin. The Start Up Nation Central Q1 2026 census counted 9,420 active technology companies in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, with the typical senior software engineer at the post Series B cluster (Wiz, Snyk, Lightricks, monday.com, Riskified, Fiverr, JFrog) earning 540,000 ILS a year base plus 80,000 to 210,000 ILS in stock options on the vested schedule. The Israeli top marginal of 50.0 percent applies above 663,240 ILS a year (2026 schedule), with the National Insurance contribution capped at the 49,030 ILS a month ceiling. The effective at the 540,000 ILS senior line lands at 44 percent.

Median one bedroom rent in the Tel Aviv Yafo central districts (Rothschild, Florentin, Neve Tzedek, Hatzefon Hayashan) runs 6,800 to 9,400 ILS a month in Q1 2026 per Yad2. The 2024 to 2025 conflict period pushed 12 percent of the founder cohort to relocate to Cyprus, Athens, and Berlin temporarily; the May 2026 census shows 60 percent of those have returned to Tel Aviv with the resumption of fundraising activity. For more on the regional comparison see our Tel Aviv city profile, the Dubai vs Tel Aviv comparison, and the cities for startups ranking.

№ 07 , Singapore and Bangalore

The two Asian tech worker defaults

Singapore remains the regional headquarters city for the Asia Pacific operations of Google, Meta, Stripe, Shopify, ByteDance, and a dense cluster of Singapore based fintech (Grab, Sea Group, Coda Payments, Aspire). The senior software engineer median runs 165,000 SGD a year at the FAANG tier, somewhat lower in the local startups (110,000 to 145,000 SGD). The Singapore top marginal of 24.0 percent applies from 1 million SGD a year (the 2024 fiscal package raised the threshold from 320,000 SGD), with the practical effective rate at the 165,000 SGD median sitting at 12.6 percent. That is the lowest effective tax position on this list for the senior tier. The Employment Pass requires 5,600 SGD a month minimum salary (raised from 5,000 SGD in September 2023) and a complementarity Self Assessment Framework score; processing is 3 to 6 weeks. Median 1 bedroom rent in the central core (Tiong Bahru, Robertson Quay, Bugis, Tanjong Pagar) runs 3,800 to 5,400 SGD a month in Q1 2026.

Bangalore holds the largest tech labor pool by headcount of any city on this list, at 1.7 million IT services and product company workers per the NASSCOM Strategic Review 2026. The senior software engineer median at the product company tier (Flipkart, Razorpay, Zerodha, Swiggy, Zomato, Freshworks, the India offices of Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and Salesforce) runs 4,800,000 INR a year. The Indian top marginal of 39.0 percent (30 percent slab plus the surcharge and cess at 4 percent) applies above 5 million INR a year under the new tax regime. The effective at the senior tier lands at 28 to 32 percent. Median one bedroom rent in Indiranagar, HSR Layout, Koramangala, and Whitefield runs 28,000 to 48,000 INR a month, with the central tech corridors at the upper end. The currency adjusted comparison places the senior Bangalore engineer at 65 percent of the after tax purchasing power of the senior Berlin engineer once cost of living is normalized. For deeper context see our Bangalore city profile.

№ 08 , Stockholm, Dublin, and Toronto

The three secondary anchors

Stockholm hosts the Spotify, Klarna, King (Activision Blizzard subsidiary), Tobii, iZettle (PayPal), and Northvolt engineering clusters. The senior software engineer median runs 760,000 SEK a year. Sweden's top combined marginal of 52.0 percent (state 20 percent, municipal Stockholm 30.65 percent, plus the pension contributions) applies above 643,100 SEK a year (2026 schedule). The effective at the median lands at 39 percent. Median 1 bedroom rent in Sodermalm, Vasastan, and Kungsholmen runs 12,000 to 17,000 SEK a month in Q1 2026 per Hemnet. The dark winter and the Swedish income tax position keep this from being a top three pick on after tax wealth accumulation, but the cluster quality and the work life baseline are above the European median.

Dublin is the European headquarters cluster for Google EMEA, Meta EMEA, LinkedIn EMEA, Amazon AWS, Stripe, Intercom, HubSpot, Workday, and the gambling tech (Paddy Power, Flutter). The senior software engineer median runs 105,000 EUR a year at the US tech employer cluster. The Irish top marginal of 40.0 percent applies from 44,000 EUR, with the Universal Social Charge adding 8.0 percent at the higher income tier; the combined effective at 105,000 EUR lands at 41 percent. The Critical Skills Employment Permit processes in 4 to 8 weeks and grants 5 year stay with a path to permanent residency at year 5. Median one bedroom rent in Dublin 2, 4, 6, and 8 runs 2,150 to 2,950 EUR a month in Q1 2026 per Daft.ie.

Toronto hosts the largest Canadian tech employer cluster at Shopify, OpenText, Constellation Software, Wattpad (Naver), the Canadian offices of Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Adobe, plus the Vector Institute AI research network. The senior software engineer median runs 175,000 CAD a year. The Canadian federal plus Ontario combined top marginal of 53.5 percent applies above 246,752 CAD a year (2026 schedule); the effective at 175,000 CAD lands at 38 percent. The Global Talent Stream processes in 2 weeks for category B occupations including software engineering and grants the work permit with a path to permanent residency in 12 to 24 months under the Express Entry CRS system. Median one bedroom rent in King West, Liberty Village, the Annex, and Riverside runs 2,250 to 2,950 CAD a month in Q1 2026 per Bullpen Research.

№ 09 , The verdict

How to pick

Use the after tax target first. Highest absolute take home for the senior engineer at the FAANG tier: San Francisco, Seattle, New York, in that order. Highest after tax in Europe: Zurich by a wide margin, then Amsterdam with the 30 percent ruling, then London. Highest after tax in Asia: Singapore by a measurable margin, then Tel Aviv on the founder track, then Bangalore on the purchasing power adjusted basis.

Layer the visa pathway second. Most accessible non sponsored route: the Estonian e Residency LLC for self employed contractors (covered in the 2026 nomad visa guide), the German EU Blue Card for the European mainland career, the UK Skilled Worker visa for English speaking professionals, the Canadian Global Talent Stream for the fastest North American path. The hardest sponsored route remains the US H1B at 85,000 annual cap against 760,000 registrations in the March 2025 lottery (an 11 percent acceptance rate). For deeper visa reading see the 2026 nomad visa guide.

Layer the lifestyle third. Best work life baseline at the senior tier: Zurich, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Singapore. Best cluster density for switching jobs without moving cities: San Francisco, London, New York, Bangalore. Best raw upside potential on equity in the next 5 years: San Francisco, Tel Aviv, Austin, New York.
