Accra vs Lagosthe independent comparison · index 6.8 vs 5.8

Accra and Lagos are the two anchor cities of Anglophone West Africa, but they answer different questions. Lagos runs the larger market at 8.4 times the Accra GDP, the deepest African private sector base outside Johannesburg, and the entertainment capital of the continent through Nollywood and Afrobeats. Accra runs the structurally safer streets at 6.8 against Lagos at 4.4, the cleaner air, the cheaper rent at 38 percent below Lagos on a central one bedroom, and the stable democratic transitions since 1992.

№ 01 , The Verdict

Which city wins.

The two cities answer different questions. The headline number resolves the index, the breakdown resolves the fit.

The Verdict

Accra wins on safety, cost, and quality of life.

Accra wins on the structural safety axis at 6.8 against Lagos at 4.4, the rent line at 38 percent below Lagos on a central one bedroom, the cleaner air at 26 micrograms PM2.5 against Lagos at 78, the stable democratic transitions since 1992 across eight elections, and the easier visa pathway for the digital nomad and the remote worker. Lagos wins on the salary line at 22 to 38 percent above Accra on private sector technology and finance roles, the deeper corporate base at the Victoria Island and Ikoyi axis across Dangote, MTN Nigeria, GTBank, Access Bank, the regional headquarters tier for the Anglophone West Africa coverage, and the cultural depth at the Nollywood and Afrobeats industries that generate 1.8 billion dollars and 4.2 billion dollars of annual output respectively.

Accra
on the everycity index 2026

Accra scored 6.8 on the everycity index in 2026, Lagos scored 5.8. The 1.0 point spread sits on safety, cost, and structural quality of life for Accra against the salary depth, the corporate base, and the cultural output for Lagos. For the long form profiles, see the Accra city profile and the Lagos city profile.

The decision rule we have settled on: if the work is at MTN Nigeria, Dangote, GTBank, Access Bank, the Nigerian Stock Exchange listed corporate tier, the Nollywood film industry production base, the Afrobeats music industry, or the regional headquarters role at the Victoria Island and Ikoyi axis with the naira denominated salary at 14 million naira and above, Lagos is the math. If the work is at the African Continental Free Trade Area secretariat in Accra, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa subregional office, the Bank of Ghana sovereign debt and macroeconomic tier, the technology startup base at the East Legon and Cantonments axis, or the household weights the safety axis and the lower cost line, Accra is the math.

For the regional context, both anchor West Africa at the megacity tier alongside Abidjan, Dakar, and the Anglophone subset that includes Banjul and Freetown at the smaller scale. The safest cities ranking places Accra at number 218 globally and Lagos at number 318; the cheapest cities ranking places Lagos at number 68 globally on the parallel market dollar conversion and Accra at number 78.

Accra is cheaper on eight of twelve cost lines including the rent stack, where the 365 dollar central rent gap and the 730 dollar family three bedroom gap compound across a 12 month lease into 8,760 dollars of preserved capital before tax. The Lagos premium is structural, off the Victoria Island and Ikoyi expat demand against a constrained central supply pipeline that the lagoon constrained land base does not relieve.

Lagos wins on the basic basket lines that the November 2023 naira liberalization compressed sharply on the dollar conversion. Groceries, public transport, and coffee run 8 to 14 percent below Accra at the May 2026 reading, with the parallel market rate that the Central Bank of Nigeria policy normalized at 1,540 naira to the dollar in 2024 holding within 4 percent through 2025. The Ghanaian cedi runs at 14.8 to the dollar with the November 2024 IMF program supporting the structural disinflation. The cost of living report walks the basket math.

For the international transfer side, Wise handles GHS and NGN conversion at within 1.8 percent of the mid market rate, well below the 4.5 to 8 percent that the Ghanaian and Nigerian retail banks apply on retail FX. The cost converter tool takes a salary in either direction and produces the purchasing power adjusted equivalent.

Accra wins safety on five of five sub axes by 2.4 to 2.6 points. The 4.4 Lagos overall is the lowest on the West African megacity set we score, off the structural armed robbery and area boy extortion pattern that the Lagos State Government Operation Mesa response has compressed since 2022 but has not eliminated at the after dark axis. Accra at 6.8 sits in the West African top three alongside Dakar at 6.6 and Banjul at 6.4.

For the new arrival, SafetyWing covers the first six months at 48 to 62 dollars a month for the under 40 single resident. The Lagos residential pattern requires the estate or compound tier at Victoria Island, Ikoyi, or Lekki Phase 1 with armed security at 380 to 720 dollars a month on the service charge overlay; the Accra residential pattern requires the gated compound at East Legon or Cantonments at 145 to 245 dollars a month for the equivalent service. The safest cities ranking places Accra at number 218 globally and Lagos at number 318 on the 350 city set.

Healthcare quality. Both cities run the private network at the international standard tier. Lagos anchors at the Reddington Hospital, the EKO Hospital, and the Lagoon Hospital at 380 to 720 dollars a month for the comprehensive medical aid plan. Accra runs the Trust Hospital, the Nyaho Medical Centre, and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital private wing at 195 to 385 dollars a month for the equivalent plan, with the medical evacuation flight to South Africa or Europe covering the complex case. The quality of life ranking places Accra at number 184 globally and Lagos at number 268.

Accra wins climate on every axis the methodology weights. The 75 fewer rainy days a year, the 548 more sunshine hours, the lower humidity reading at 78 percent against 82 percent in Lagos, and the cooler 80F annual average against 82F in Lagos are the structural reads. The Harmattan dry season in Accra runs December through March with the dust load from the Sahara that drops visibility on 14 to 22 days a year; Lagos runs the same Harmattan pattern at lower intensity off the southwestern position on the Bight of Benin.

The Lagos wet season runs March through July at the peak intensity with 28 mm average daily rainfall on the wettest week in June, with the August short dry break before the September to October second peak. Accra runs the single wet season May through July at lower intensity. The climate match tool finds cities with similar profiles. Both pair with Dar es Salaam and Mombasa on the tropical coastal axis.

Air quality. Accra PM2.5 averages 26 micrograms year round, well above the WHO 5 microgram guideline, off the dust load on the central business district and the diesel generator emissions on the residential axis through the ECG load shedding cycle. Lagos PM2.5 averages 78 micrograms year round, the worst reading among the West African megacities, off the generator emissions across the 22 million resident catchment and the diesel truck flow at the Apapa port corridor. The clean air ranking places Accra at number 284 globally and Lagos at number 332.

Lagos pays 30 to 50 percent more on private sector technology and finance roles, off the deeper corporate base anchored at Victoria Island, Ikoyi, and the Lekki technology corridor. The Lagos technology salary curve has lifted 42 percent since 2022 on the foreign investor inflow to Flutterwave, Paystack, and the broader fintech tier. The Accra technology salary at the senior engineering tier sits at 38,000 dollars, with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area secretariat host city status not yet translating to a comparable private sector premium.

Tax. Lagos runs the Nigerian income tax regime at a top marginal rate of 24 percent on monthly income above 3.2 million naira, plus the 1 percent National Housing Fund contribution. Accra runs the Ghanaian regime at 35 percent on monthly income above 50,000 Ghanaian cedis, plus the 5.5 percent SSNIT social security contribution. The Lagos tax burden runs 7 percentage points below the Accra equivalent on the 100,000 dollar gross. The tax calculator tool runs your number against either.

The major employers in Lagos are MTN Nigeria, Dangote Group, GTBank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, First Bank Nigeria, Nestle Nigeria, the Nollywood production base, the Afrobeats labels including Mavin Records and Chocolate City, and the regional headquarters of the Big Four consultancies. The major employers in Accra are Standard Chartered Ghana, the Bank of Ghana, MTN Ghana, the Ghana Cocoa Board, the African Continental Free Trade Area secretariat, the UN Economic Commission for Africa subregional office, and the technology startups at the East Legon and Cantonments axis.

Lagos wins on nightlife, food scene, and cultural density by 1.4 to 1.8 points. The Lagos nightlife at the Lekki, Victoria Island, and Ikoyi corridor runs the deepest African scene with the New Afrika Shrine, the Quilox, Hard Rock Cafe, and the daily afrobeats live circuit. The Nollywood and Afrobeats industries that generate 1.8 billion dollars and 4.2 billion dollars of annual output anchor the structural cultural depth that the Accra equivalent at the Republic Bar and Grill, the Front Back Restaurant, and the Alliance Francaise cannot match at the same scale. The foodies ranking places Lagos at number 84 globally and Accra at number 124.

Accra wins on walkability and public transit by 1.2 and 0.4 points respectively. The Accra walkability score at 5.4 sits structurally above the Lagos 4.2 on the smaller urban footprint and the absence of the Third Mainland Bridge to Apapa Wharf traffic pattern that drives the Lagos central business district commute to 90 to 180 minutes one way. The Accra metro mass transit system runs at the 8 cedi fare on the dedicated bus rapid transit corridor. The outdoor cities ranking places Accra at number 184 globally and Lagos at number 268 on the same scoring methodology.

Visa difficulty separates them by two points. Accra runs the Work and Residence Permit through the Ghana Immigration Service at 600 dollars for the 1 year permit with the 6 to 10 week processing window at the employer sponsorship tier. Lagos runs the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card at 2,000 dollars annually through the Nigerian Immigration Service with the 8 to 16 week processing window and the Ministry of Interior business permit prerequisite for the foreign worker. The 2026 visa guide covers both pathways.

Both cities operate the eVisa platform at the 60 to 90 day window for the digital nomad and the remote worker. The Ghanaian eVisa launched in 2023 at the 150 dollar fee covers 132 nationalities; the Nigerian eVisa launched in 2024 at the 119 dollar fee covers 197 nationalities at the multiple entry tier. The digital nomad cities ranking places Accra at number 84 globally on the safety and cost combination and Lagos at number 168 on the structural safety and air quality gap.

Working language. Both cities operate in English at all tiers including the local government, the courts, and the school admissions process. Twi, Ga, and Hausa sit alongside English in the Accra public administration; Yoruba and pidgin sit alongside English in Lagos. No functional fluency in the local language is required at the working tier in either.

Education. Accra runs the international school stack at 12,000 to 28,000 dollars a year across the Lincoln Community School, the Ghana International School, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner International College, and the Roman Ridge School. Lagos runs the international stack at 18,000 to 42,000 dollars a year across the American International School of Lagos, the British International School Lagos, Lekki British School, and the Greensprings School. The international schools ranking places Lagos at number 124 globally and Accra at number 168.

Move logistics. The shipping container math from Europe runs 3,800 to 5,800 dollars on a 20 foot to either; the Port of Tema handles the Accra inbound at the 25 kilometer inland trucking and the Port of Apapa handles the Lagos inbound directly. The pet relocation timeline is 14 days for both from the rabies free origin list. The relocation checklist covers both. For the regional currency strategy, the best banks for expats guide walks the multi currency account math.

№ 08 , The Final Word

The read for each reader.

For the executive at MTN Nigeria, Dangote, GTBank, or the Nigerian Stock Exchange listed corporate tier, the Nollywood film industry production professional, the Afrobeats music industry role, the entrepreneur on the Flutterwave or Paystack fintech tier, and the household weighting the salary line above 18 million naira annually, Lagos wins. The corporate depth and the cultural output survive the safety and cost gaps.

For the household weighting the safety axis, the structurally lower cost line at 270 dollars below Lagos on the monthly all in for a single resident, the cleaner air at 26 micrograms PM2.5 against Lagos at 78, the stable democratic transitions, the easier digital nomad visa pathway, and the Africa Continental Free Trade Area host city status, Accra wins. The deep dive city guide walks the math at the household budget level.
