The UK Skilled Worker visa is the post Brexit replacement for the Tier 2 General route, in force since December 1, 2020 and significantly rebuilt by the Home Office on April 4, 2024. It is the primary work migration channel for the inbound foreign professional with a UK employer sponsor, and it carries a 5 year residence track to indefinite leave to remain. The United Kingdom country guide sets the broader move context for the inbound resident.

The 2024 reforms reset the structure on three dimensions. The general salary floor moved from 26,200 pounds to 38,700 pounds (a 47 percent jump). The Shortage Occupation List was retired and replaced by the narrower Immigration Salary List with a 20 percent salary discount and a 30,960 pound floor only on listed roles. The going rate threshold moved from the 25th percentile to the median (50th percentile) of UK earnings for each occupation code published by the Office for National Statistics.

The Home Office issued 234,200 Skilled Worker visas in the year ending December 2024, down from 337,200 in the prior 12 months. The 2025 issuance fell again to 196,400 as the higher salary floor filtered through the application pipeline. The 2026 trajectory at the May reading is tracking 180,000 annual issuances. The structural pivot is from the volume tilt of the 2021 to 2023 window to a higher salary, lower volume policy posture under the current government.

№ 01 , Who qualifies: the four gates.

The Skilled Worker visa runs four eligibility gates that the applicant must clear in order. Gate one is the sponsor gate. The applicant must hold a Certificate of Sponsorship from a Home Office licensed sponsor; the sponsor list at the May 2026 reading runs 119,400 active organizations across the United Kingdom. Gate two is the role gate. The role must sit at RQF Level 3 or above (A level equivalent), down from the RQF Level 6 (degree level) threshold that the prior Tier 2 General route required before December 2020.

Gate three is the salary gate. The salary must clear the higher of three thresholds: the general 38,700 pound floor, the going rate for the occupation code from the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, and the per hour floor of 15.88 pounds. The going rate is the binding constraint on most professional roles; the 38,700 pound floor is binding mainly on junior or hospitality adjacent positions.

Gate four is the English language gate. The applicant must demonstrate English at B1 of the Common European Framework, either by nationality (majority English speaking countries), by qualification (a UK or Anglophone degree taught in English), or by passing a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider. The IELTS for UKVI 4.0 on each band hits the B1 threshold.

Three discount tracks reduce the salary floor for specific cohorts. New entrants under 26 or in the first 4 years of the route pay a 30 percent discount (28,200 pound floor, 23,200 pound going rate floor for shortage roles). PhD holders in a STEM field linked to the role get a 20 percent discount. Roles on the Immigration Salary List (the narrow successor to the Shortage Occupation List) get a 20 percent discount with a 30,960 pound absolute floor. The visa difficulty checker positions the route against the other UK and EU options.

№ 02 , The salary numbers, occupation by occupation.

The 2024 reset moved every occupation code to a new going rate baseline. The 12 highest volume Skilled Worker occupation codes at the May 2026 reading run as follows.

The salary calculation is the gross annual base salary only. Bonuses, allowances, employer pension contributions, equity, and overtime do not count. The 48 hour week is the maximum hours basis; the per hour floor of 15.88 pounds caps the salary that the Home Office accepts for a long week role. The UK tax calculator runs the after tax math against the inbound origin jurisdiction.

№ 03 , The filing pipeline: from CoS to BRP.

The Skilled Worker filing pipeline runs in 5 stages across a 12 to 16 week window from the sponsor decision to the Biometric Residence Permit collection in the United Kingdom.

Stage one is the Certificate of Sponsorship issuance. The licensed UK sponsor assigns the CoS through the Sponsor Management System; the CoS reference number lands in the applicant inbox within 2 to 4 weeks of the sponsor decision. The CoS is valid for 3 months and must cover the job title, the SOC 2020 occupation code, the salary, the hours, the work location, and the start date.

Stage two is the visa application. The applicant files online at the UK Visas and Immigration portal within the 3 month CoS window, pays the application fee (1,084 pounds for a visa up to 3 years from outside the UK, 1,519 pounds for over 3 years; 885 pound and 1,420 pound respectively for Immigration Salary List roles), pays the Immigration Health Surcharge (1,035 pounds per year of the visa, payable up front for the full term, so 5,175 pounds on a 5 year grant), and books the biometric appointment.

Stage three is the biometric appointment at a Visa Application Centre. The 19 partner network of VFS Global and TLScontact covers 226 cities globally. The 30 to 45 minute appointment collects fingerprints, a digital photograph, and the document review. The Priority Service (500 pound add) returns the decision in 5 working days; the Super Priority Service (1,000 pound add) returns next working day; the standard service returns in 15 to 21 working days outside peak windows.

Stage four is the visa grant and the 90 day vignette entry sticker. The grant arrives by email; the passport with the entry vignette returns by courier; the applicant has 90 days from the vignette start date to enter the United Kingdom. Stage five is the Biometric Residence Permit collection at a post office within 10 days of UK arrival. The 2025 launch of the eVisa system replaces the physical BRP for visas issued from January 1, 2025; the eVisa lives on the UKVI digital account.

№ 04 , What it costs: the full tally.

The total Skilled Worker filing cost for a single applicant on a 5 year visa runs 7,700 to 9,400 pounds across the pre application to grant window. The breakdown for the standard 5 year grant runs as follows.

The 2024 fee schedule added a separate Immigration Skills Charge that the sponsor (not the applicant) must pay: 1,000 pounds a year for medium and large sponsors (5,000 pounds over 5 years), 364 pounds a year for small sponsors and charities (1,820 pounds over 5 years). The sponsor may pass this cost back to the applicant by contract; the 2024 to 2026 enforcement guidance from the Home Office discourages but does not prohibit the pass through. The expat insurance comparison covers the supplemental private cover question for the inbound resident.

№ 05 , Settlement: the 5 year path to ILR.

The Skilled Worker visa carries a 5 year residence track to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), the UK permanent residence category. The track requirements at the May 2026 reading are 5 continuous years of UK Skilled Worker residence (or other qualifying routes), absences below 180 days in any rolling 12 month window across the 5 year period, the same sponsor throughout (or the same occupation if changing sponsor), the higher salary requirement at the ILR application date, the Knowledge of Life in the UK test pass, and the B1 English requirement at filing.

The May 2025 White Paper announced the move from a 5 year to a 10 year ILR qualifying period for most routes, with implementation tracking to late 2026 or 2027 subject to parliamentary process. The transitional protections at the May 2026 reading preserve the 5 year route for applicants who entered the United Kingdom on a Skilled Worker visa before the implementation date; the post implementation cohort runs the 10 year route. The structural read for the May 2026 inbound applicant is that early filing crystallizes the 5 year route at the current rules.

The ILR filing fee at May 2026 is 3,029 pounds for the main applicant, payable at the application. The Knowledge of Life in the UK test is a 50 pound test booking at one of the 30 UK test centres; the pass mark is 18 of 24 questions correct. The British citizenship application after 12 months as ILR holder runs an 1,885 pound fee for the naturalization application plus a 130 pound citizenship ceremony fee.

№ 06 , Dependents: partner and children.

The Skilled Worker route admits dependents on the dependent partner and dependent child sub categories. The dependent partner must be a spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner with at least 2 years of cohabitation evidenced by joint accounts, joint tenancy, or joint utility billing. The dependent child must be under 18 at the application date or, if 18 or over, must have been previously granted as a dependent and continue to live as part of the family unit.

The dependent visa fees match the main applicant: 1,519 pounds per dependent per visa over 3 years, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at 1,035 pounds a year per dependent (5,175 pounds for 5 years). A family of four (main applicant, partner, two children) on a 5 year Skilled Worker grant runs a total Home Office cost of 27,200 to 28,400 pounds across the application, fee, and IHS line.

The dependent partner holds unrestricted work rights in the United Kingdom from the visa grant; the dependent partner can work for any UK employer in any role at any salary without a separate sponsor licence or Certificate of Sponsorship. The dependent child of school age must enroll in UK education (state, independent, or international school); the international schools ranking covers the per city school inventory for the inbound family.

The 2024 reforms removed the dependent right for care workers (Health and Care visa, occupation code 6135 and 6136) entering the United Kingdom from March 11, 2024. The Skilled Worker route preserves the full dependent right. The March 2024 minimum income requirement for the Spouse visa (separate from Skilled Worker dependents) moved to 29,000 pounds with a planned move to 38,700 pounds; the Skilled Worker dependent route does not carry this separate floor.

№ 07 , Common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

The four most frequent Skilled Worker filing errors at the Home Office decision stage are the going rate miscalculation, the genuine vacancy test failure, the maintenance funds proof, and the SOC code mismatch. The going rate miscalculation occurs where the sponsor or applicant uses the prior occupation code going rate rather than the post April 2024 median figures published by the Home Office; the application is refused on salary insufficiency even where the applicant earns above the 38,700 pound general floor.

The genuine vacancy test failure occurs where the role description on the Certificate of Sponsorship does not match the actual duties the applicant will perform, or where the salary on the CoS is materially higher than the market range for the role. The Home Office runs the genuine vacancy test through the Sponsor Management System and the post grant compliance audits; failure can refuse the application and revoke the sponsor licence.

The maintenance funds proof requires 1,270 pounds in the applicant bank account for 28 continuous days ending within 31 days of the application date, unless the sponsor certifies the maintenance on the CoS (the A rated sponsor route). The 28 day seasoning is strict; transfers in or out during the period reset the count. The conservative reading at the busy Visa Application Centres is to hold the 1,270 pound balance for the full 31 days before the filing date.

The SOC code mismatch occurs where the sponsor assigns the role to a SOC 2020 occupation code that does not match the actual duties; the post April 2024 reset moved many roles to a new code with a higher going rate, and the sponsor may default to the prior code. The Home Office cross checks against the role description on the CoS and refuses on code mismatch. The UK Graduate visa route guide covers the post study work alternative for the inbound recent UK graduate.

№ 08 , The verdict: who the Skilled Worker fits.

The Skilled Worker visa works structurally for four reader profiles. Inbound professionals with a UK employer sponsor offering a role at the going rate plus, planning a 5 year minimum residence to ILR, willing to absorb the 7,700 to 9,400 pound front loaded cost on a 5 year grant. Inbound healthcare professionals on the Health and Care visa stream (a parallel route with lower fees and IHS waiver for eligible NHS roles). Inbound STEM PhD holders qualifying for the 20 percent salary discount on the going rate. Inbound new entrants under 26 qualifying for the 30 percent salary discount on the first 4 years.

The Skilled Worker does not work structurally for three reader profiles. Inbound applicants without a sponsor licence holder in the UK pipeline (the route does not allow self sponsorship). Inbound applicants for roles below the RQF Level 3 skill floor (most hospitality, agriculture, and personal service roles outside the Health and Care stream). Inbound applicants whose UK earnings would fall below the higher of the 38,700 pound floor and the SOC going rate after the 2024 reset.

The structural Atlas position on the Skilled Worker is that it is the dominant work migration route into the United Kingdom at the May 2026 baseline, but the 2024 salary reset has narrowed the addressable applicant pool from the 2021 to 2023 peak. The 2026 nomad visa guide covers the alternative for the location independent worker; the United Kingdom country guide covers the broader move context; the London city profile, the Manchester profile, the Edinburgh profile, and the Bristol profile cover the per metro detail for the inbound resident.

The bottom line

The Skilled Worker is the operational best fit for the inbound professional with a UK sponsor offering the going rate or above, planning the 5 year route to indefinite leave to remain. The 38,700 pound general floor, the 5,175 pound 5 year health surcharge, the 1,519 pound application fee, and the going rate per occupation code combine into the highest barrier to entry among the major Anglophone work visas. The May 2025 White Paper signals a move to a 10 year ILR qualifying period; transitional protections preserve the 5 year route for the May 2026 inbound applicant who files before implementation.

The next stage of the reading runs through the metro selection and the tax exposure. The London profile, the Manchester profile, the Edinburgh profile, the Birmingham profile, the Glasgow profile, and the cities in the UK ranking cover the per city rent, salary, and lifestyle detail. The cost of living calculator runs the side by side basket against the inbound origin metro; the tax calculator runs the after tax math; the visa difficulty checker positions the Skilled Worker against the alternative pathways. For the international money side of the move, multi currency banking with Wise handles the salary sterling conversion at mid market rates.
